Trent University, Fleming College students awarded for innovation

Almost 50 projects created by some of the brightest young business minds in the city were on display Thursday at the third annual Community Innovation Forum at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club.

The forum was co-hosted by Fleming College, Trent University, the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster and the Trent Centre for Community Based Education.

Almost 100 students from a wide range of disciplines, working individually or in teams, were paired with local businesses and organizations to create projects that would benefit the clients.

Projects included an online prisoner data base for city police; mapping stormwater management for the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority; and the design of outdoor learning grounds for Camp Kawartha.

The entries were evaluated by a team of 25 judges on innovation, professionalism, commercial value and presentation.

Awards were presented to the winning projects in the evening.

The event drew about 350 people throughout the day, and also included the DBIA Creative Cocktail networking session, a panel discussion on Breaking Down the Barriers to Thrive in Peterborough, and the presentation of the four Bear?s Lair finalists who will compete in that event April 23 at Market Hall.

There was also a fireside chat on the role of foundations and post-secondary institutions in revitalizing local economies, with Trent and Fleming presidents Steven Franklin and Tony Tilly, along with Stephen Huddart, president and CEO of the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation.

?Our dream is to create awareness of the great talent we have at Trent and Fleming,? said Patti Watson, of the tourism and travel program at Fleming College, one of the organizers. ?Having the business community come in and be a part of it is absolutely huge. It?s fabulous. We need to continue to showcase those talents.?
