Two people died when a passenger airliner rolled off the runway at Moscow's Vnukovo airport and broke apart on Saturday, the country's interior ministry said.
Ministry spokesman Gennady Bogachev announced the deaths on the government-run news channel Vesti.
"After a hard landing, the plane split into three pieces," Yelena Krylova, chief spokeswoman for the airport, added in televised comments.?
The Tupolev 204 jet rolled more than 1,600 feet onto a highway before breaking up, Elena Smirnikh, deputy spokesperson for Russia's emergency ministry,?told NBC News.
Vesti reported that there were 12 people on board the aircraft operated by Moscow-based Red Wings Airlines. It was traveling from the Czech Republic.
TV footage showed the wreckage of the plane.?The plane's nose, including the cockpit area, appeared sheared off in a photo shown on Vesti.?
Light snow was falling in Moscow at the time, but it was not clear if weather was a factor.
The Tu-204 is a twin-engine medium-range jet with a capacity of 210 passengers.
The identities of the victims were not immediately available.
