Forty-seven percent of pregnancies are unplanned in the United States. Over half a million children are in foster care. These statistics can seem overwhelming to most people. While the problems that cause children to be placed in foster care are numerous there is something you can do. Have you ever considered domestic adoption? While international adoption rates are declining, domestic adoption rates are on the rise; specifically infant domestic adoptions. There are multiple types of domestic adoption, with private infant adoption being the most popular. These adoptions begin before a child is even born with the adoptive family and birth family creating a plan for the baby. Unlike the movie versions of domestic adoption, today?s adoptions are very open with both sets of families exchanging information and the child usually grows up with the knowledge of both his birth family and adoptive family. Research has shown that children who have some knowledge of their biological family and adoption story struggle less with identity issues as they get older.
Adoption plans range from ?open?, meaning identifying info is exchanged with all parties involved, to ?closed?? meaning only the legally required information is exchanged. Today, most families and birth-parents are selecting a ?happy medium?? between these two extremes. While each adoption relationship is completely different the trend is moving towards more openness in domestic adoption.
The infants available for domestic adoption usually have a beautiful mixture of ethnic backgrounds. These children are sometimes considered ?hard to place? because they do not fit into a particular racial category. Adoption professional are urging parents to become more open with their desires in order for these children to find loving homes. Domestic Adoption can also be a much simpler process compared to international adoption. The average wait time tends to be faster for domestic adoptions as well, although a family?s preference for race, gender etc., can be a varying factor.
If you are desiring a younger child and more openness in adoption maybe Domestic Infant Adoption is right for you.
